Snore Guard

Snoring is extremely common and, in many cases, relatively harmless. Mild snoring habits are harmless and at most can be annoying. However, loud and chronic snoring behavior can be disruptive to sleep and is a sign of a more serious sleep disorder, otherwise known as obstructive sleep apnea. Snoring is a result of partial airway blockage, usually by the soft tissue in your throat. The flow of air along this soft tissue causes it to vibrate, generating the snoring sound. Prior to receiving treatment for obstructive sleep apnea, a board certified sleep medicine physician must complete a sleep study and provide a definitive diagnosis. If it is recommended to have a snore guard appliance made, you would then contact our office for an appointment. A snore guard appliance is a small plastic device that fits in the mouth like a night guard. The appliance helps prevent the collapse of the tongue and soft tissue in the back of the throat by moving the lower jaw into a forward position. Increasing the space in the airway tube will reduce soft tissue vibration in order to help eliminate snoring and ensure a good night’s sleep.
